Val Smith, USNA 1952

UPDATE: Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, December 10th, at 1 pm
Longtime Chapter supporter recently passed away.

It is with great sadness that I pass along news of the passing of Val Smith, USNA 1952.

Val was a stalwart supporter of the Naval Academy and for many years a fixture of the Chapter in Dallas. For years Val organized Navy's team in the annual North Texas Service Academy Flag Football Challenge, leading our team to the local Commander in Chief's Trophy many times. Those who knew him praise his dedication to

Our own Mark Lambright, USNA '75, had this reflection on Val:

"I thought you would want to know that Val Smith died Saturday morning 11/28. Always the competitor, Val sent me an email just before our flag game on Saturday, November 21 telling me he would play.  He wanted to snap a couple downs and then be taken out to coach the team.  His wife, Sylvia, called me to tell me that he had fallen and was taken to the hospital on Friday, Nov 20.  We missed him at the game.

"I saw him at the hospital on Wednesday and was able to have a goodbye conversation; trying to keep it positive.  It turns out he had a bone marrow/blood cancer and he died Saturday November 28.

"I’m sure you will agree; Val was a great man, great competitor and great friend.  I will miss him at our future games.

"I’ve also attached a picture that I think Val would like.  This is the day 9 of us beat Army & AF.  They had huge teams but we won.  With only one sub; all of us played most of the games both ways.  2011 – Val was 82.  His last game was last November – he was 85 and played several downs."

UPDATE: Val’s funeral will be held Thursday, Dec  10 at 1PM at the Dallas – Ft Worth National Veterans Cemetery, Columbarium D.  The address of the cemetery is:  2000 Mountain Creek Parkway Dallas, TX 75211

The cemetery has advised us that attendees should plan to arrive in Lane C no earlier than 1230 and no later than 1245.  The tight time requirement is due to a number of other funerals to be held that day.

No flowers are requested; a donation to the Admiral Farragut Academy, St. Petersburg, FL would be Val’s preference.

This document will be used at his funeral services. It is a beautiful tribute to a great man and a proud Alumni of the Naval Academy.
